The United States is marking the 15th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.
The 9/11 attack, in which 19 Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners, was the deadliest terror strike on U.S. soil.
Two of the airliners crashed into the World Trade Center in New York, bringing both of the Twin Towers to the ground. A third slammed into the Pentagon in Washington, while the fourth crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers overpowered the attackers.
A service was held on September 10 in New York to honor the 343 firefighters who died when the towers collapsed.
U.S. presidential hopefuls Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are expected to attend commemoration ceremonies at the World Trade Center site. The two have agreed to refrain from campaigning on the anniversary.
